Nicholas Falgione, 55, of Wexford, Pa., a longtime municipal banker and managing director at PNC Capital Markets, died on May 12 after a three-year battle with liver cancer.

He joined PNC in 2013 as a managing director based in Pittsburgh as part of the expansion of the firm’s public finance teams in Pennsylvania and Florida. His 16 years of public finance experience followed his most recent position as managing director of public finance at Boenning & Scattergood, Inc., and previously as a group executive director in tax-exempt capital markets at J.P. Morgan Securities.

At PNC, Faglione was in charge of leading development of financial structures for government entities in Western Pennsylvania and helping to build the firm’s coverage of major governmental issuers in its markets.

His colleagues in the industry remembered Falgione as a front-runner in public finance.

“His gentle demeanor and intelligence were always an invitation to listen and engage,” Patrick McCoy, director of finance at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said of his colleague of 15 years.

Robert Dailey, managing director and head of the public finance business at PNC, called him “an outstanding banker, an innovator and an unusually clear thinker; he championed sophisticated simplicity and the value of a good idea.”

“He had great relationships with clients, peers, and competitors throughout the public finance industry,” Dailey said. “He was a business leader, comfortable taking the first chair or simply advising other bankers, and always a fierce competitor.”.

Jason DiMartini, a managing director at PNC, said, Falgione was a mentor and “inspiration to so many,” noting that some of his colleague’s hobbies were hiking, camping, kayaking and walking his dogs, and spending time over a good meal with family and friends.

“He was also a prolific, self-trained chef with his annual Feast of the Seven Fishes being something he took special pride in,” DiMartini said. “He was well read, enjoyed watching movies and possessed a tremendous sense of humor and perspective. He lived heroically and was a warrior until the end.”

Falgione earned his bachelor’s of science degree in economics and microbiology and his master’s of business degree both at the University of Pittsburgh.

Falgione was recognized in 2019 with an excellence in sales award — the highest sales award at PNC’s instutional bank for top 1% performance.

He earned his bachelor of science and his master’s of business administration degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, and two sons, Nico and Michael; and was the cherished son of Nicholas and Janice Falgione and James and Sharon Haberfield; brother of Dana (Benjamin) Krokosky, Darcy (John) Auburn, and James (Jackie) Haberfield, as well as aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and special cousins.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Camelot Event Center in Wexford. Arrangements are being handled by Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home and Crematory Inc; Turtle Creek/Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave. at James St., Turtle Creek.
